"Cross Cultural Education with Multicultural Media"
Vision
The contribution of visual media is critically needed when Indonesian diversity is filled by violence, politics of hate, and ethnocentrism. In the digital era film, television, or internet are more and more accessible for all members of society, attracting them with a higher level of interaction. However, the biggest problem is that the visual media has been dominated by market and the ruling elites, both oriented on centralization of power and capital accumulation. Our vision is to develop visual media as public sphere that produces, strengthens, and criticizes public values. Visual media has to become channel for dialogue, to negotiate new values for recent problems. In multicultural society, the real problem is not how to be different but how can we live together in the differences. Public sphere should mediate the inter-relationship of various cultures and identities. Public sphere is the border as well as the trespass, the negotiation, translation and dialogue. Public sphere provide channels for the minorities for their rights to communicate and understood.
